Blinds are a great way to control the light and privacy in your home, but they can also be a magnet for dust and dirt. If you’re tired of seeing dust bunnies on your blinds every time you open them, don’t worry. We have some easy tips to help you keep your blinds dust free and sparkling.
How to repel dust from blinds
The best way to repel and keep dust off blinds is to do a quick dust regularly with a microfiber cloth and then wipe them over again with a dryer sheet. The tiny fibers in microfiber cloths are electrostatically charged. They attract dust and keep it inside the cloth. This makes them perfect for cleaning off dust without spreading it around.
The dryer sheet will reduce static on the blind, so you won’t find dust arriving back on the blind so quickly. Another thing you can do is to pull them up when you don’t need them. When the sun moves and you want to maximise the light in the room, pull them up so that light can come in. At the same time, you are protecting them from gathering dust.
How to clean dusty blinds
I’ve owned both wooden and aluminium Venetian blinds. Wooden is my favourite because the slats are thicker and so don’t bend and kink as you clean them as aluminium blinds can. I’ve always used the same method to clean blinds whatever they are made of. There is no need to remove the blind you can do all the dusting in place.
Step 1 – Pull the blind down fully and then tilt down.
For Venetian blinds, the first thing you will want to do is to pull the blind down fully and then tilt down. This will expose the top of each slat so that you can clean it easily.
Step 2 – Dust.
Next, take a clean and dry microfiber cloth and begin wiping each slat starting at the top. The top of each slat is usually where most of the dust accumulates, so make sure you get rid of it all. Work your way down until you reach the bottom of the blind.
Step 3 – For very grubby blinds
If your blinds are very grubby, you may need to use some water or a mild detergent to clean them. However, be careful not to use too much water or harsh chemicals, especially on wooden or faux wood blinds, as they can damage the material or cause a sticky build-up that attracts more dust.
To clean with water, dip a clean cloth in warm water and wring it out well. Then wipe each slat gently, making sure not to leave any moisture behind. You can also add a few drops of dish soap or vinegar to the water for extra cleaning power.
To clean with a mild detergent, spray some on a clean cloth and wipe each slat carefully. Avoid spraying directly on the blind, as this can cause streaks or drips. You can also use a special blind cleaner that is designed for your type of blind material.
Step 4 – Wipe with a dryer sheet.
After you have cleaned your blinds, give them a final wipe with a dryer sheet. This will help repel dust and make your blinds smell fresh and clean.
